Guide | Received a "Missing Return" Notice? Here is the Fix.
The Issue: You received a notice from the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) claiming you failed to file a tax return for a specific month or quarter.
The Common Confusion: "But I had no rental income that month, so I didn't file anything."
Why did I get this notice?
An active license requires a return, always.
When you hold an Arizona TPT License, the state legally expects a filing for every single reporting period. The state does not know you had zero income. When you fail to file, their system doesn't assume "$0 income"—it assumes "Non-Compliant."
Option 1: Fix it yourself (Fastest)
You do not need to pay taxes on money you didn't earn, but you must file the return to clear the notice.
- Log in to your AZTaxes.gov account.
- Select the Period listed on your notice (e.g., "August 2024").
- Enter $0 for your Gross Receipts.
- Submit the return.
Option 2: Let us handle it
If you prefer your Relationship Manager to resolve this dispute for you, we need the following documents to process the correction:
-
1. Copy of the Notice: Upload a clear PDF or photo of the letter. We need the Notice Date and Period Ending date.
-
2. Written Confirmation: A simple email or note stating: "I confirm I had $0 rental income for the period listed on this notice."
-
3. Access Verification: Ensure we have active delegate access to your AZTaxes.gov account. If you changed your password recently, please update us.
Once we have these three items, we will file the missing return and verify that the penalty balance is removed.
What happens if I ignore the notice?
⚠️ Danger: The "Estimated Assessment"
If you do not file the missing return to prove you made $0:
- The state will guess how much you made based on previous months.
- They will create a tax bill (Assessment) for that estimated amount.
- If unpaid, this debt can go to collections or garnishment.
File the $0 return immediately to stop this process.
